Healthy Habits on a Budget

Hi Friends! I am overwhelmed with DM’s about my last blog post about Sprouts! I had no idea so many of you loved Sprouts Market as much as me!

Because of the response I thought I’d share a few ways I save by shopping at Sprouts! And also some of my favorite things to buy there.

But first! I have great news for all my Greenville friends! Sprout’s Simpsonville’s Grand Opening is on June 13th! The first 200 shoppers will receive 20% off their initial total purchase! Ummm, talk about SAVINGS! Also I love that they will be serving yummy muffins and coffee samples before doors open AND every customer will get a cute reusable bag with their purchase!

Here are a few of my favorite ways to save at Sprouts!

  • Sprouts is famous for its farm-fresh produce, which is priced on average 20 to 25 percent below supermarket prices. One of the first things you’ll notice is produce prominently displayed at the center of the store. Among staples like apples and avocados, you’ll find more unique items like cotton candy grapes, lychee, star fruit and more. If you’re unfamiliar or curious about an item, ask any team member who will help you sample it!

  • Scoop up more savings in the Bulk Department, where you’ll find beans, grains, granolas, spices, nuts, sweets and much, much more. Buy as little as you need, or as much as you want, and less packaging in the Bulk Department means savings passed on to you!
  • Deals of the Month flyer highlights about 2,000 or more products on sale at Sprouts. Look for it in the store, or see it online!  Link: https://www.sprouts.com/web/guest/deals-of-the-month

Recently I got some of my favorite products from Sprouts Brand! Okay, you guys – seriously if you’ve never tried the Chocolate Coconut Rolls, you are not even living!

  • It’s important to me that my food is sourced well, Sprouts’ buyers look far and wide to find and try new products, including everyday grocery essentials and unique, seasonal items. They often customize flavor profiles and refine ingredients to suit Sprouts’ standards for quality, taste and value!
  • To make sure you feel good about your purchase and have fun trying new things, Sprouts offers a 100% money-back guarantee. Love it or your money back! Also I’m so thankful for Sprouts Brand because they offer a HUGE selection of natural and organic products, as well as gluten-free, vegan and non-GMO varieties!!

Eating healthy doesn’t have to send your bank account plummeting! I hope you enjoy these healthy tips! #NewKaleInTown

N’oublie pas de Vivre

Hello Friends! I hope you love this #OOTD! I’ve been very into the beret trend coming back, and I don’t think I will ever let it leave me again. Growing up, I always loved French culture, French language, French cheese – heck! I love French fries! But most of all I loved French fashion. When I was 6 I found out my grandmother on my Dad’s side is French. It all started making perfect sense to me… Madeline was my favorite book. Pepé Le Pew (the French speaking, aggressively romantic skunk) was my favorite cartoon and French Toast seemed to be my specialty when I wanted to make my mom and dad breakfast in bed! I identified so strongly with the idea of being French, I studied the language all the way from middle school to my senior year and I still find myself dreaming or thinking my most beautiful thoughts in French. My Uncle Terrance who speaks 11 languages fluently often would speak to me in the language and taught me so much…Sadly as I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten out of practice of speaking this language. Just like anything, if you don’t work a muscle it won’t get stronger. But one phrase that’s always stuck with me is this… N’oublie pas de Vivre. Don’t forget to live. I think it’s stuck to me because it’s my greatest challenge. We’ve all heard the popularly instagrammed quote “Don’t just exist…Live.” It can be a cliche, but only because it’s true. If we’re not careful, you can start living in a world where you just exist to merely get by. But I believe that God wants us to enjoy our life, God wants you to have FUN. He doesn’t want you to live without fun. The apostle Matthew spent three years with Jesus and he wrote, “Jesus came, enjoying life…” Matthew 11:19

I know work, ministry, family, other’s needs come first most times in our lives. But I want to challenge you. What have you done for you lately? What have you done to find rest? When was the last time you had fun? When was the last time you let yourself live in the moment?

“So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 8:15.

Go to a coffee shop, journal, paint your nails, blow up balloons and put them all over your room just for fun. Do a face mask, take a cat-nap, throw a tea party, go on a road trip, take a cooking class, play with puppies. Buy a plane ticket, learn a language, wear your PJ’s all day with bright red lipstick on because who cares! Take time to live. Take time to love your life. If you’re just living to please others, to collect a paycheck, to just get by – that’s not living at all. And you deserve more than that, Friend. Way more.

To-Don’t List

Hey Friends! It’s me! No really! I’m alive. I promise. I’ve been in a war lately within myself. Everyday I want to get up and write a life-changing blogpost, and then by the time I get home from work at 7:00 most days,  I realize I’m exhausted, just want some ramen noodles and to crawl into bed with Stranger Things Season Two. Then comes the cycle of feeling like the world’s biggest failure. Thoughts of insecurity and disappointment seep in and soak my heart with what I can only call an elixir of shame and annoyance with my own self. Day after day, willing myself to do more, be more, accomplish more. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a little motivation, but I do have a problem with self-inflicted emotional abuse. Trust me…been there, done that, have the scars and scary journal entries to prove it. Do you ever fall into this trap also? One moment you’re just wishing you had accomplished one more thing on your (pretty impossible) to-do list, the next you feel like the world’s biggest, ugliest failure who can’t do anything right and the world would be better off without you? WOAH! Mariah, the drama! Actually, as dramatic as it seems I know I can’t be the only one who’s made the jump within the matter of hours. Well, maybe I am. Maybe I’m the only one, but just incase there’s someone out there like me… hi!

People used to call me an “over-acheiver”, I would swat that label away like a nagging fly. I would laugh but on the inside I was thinking…”If you only knew how much of a failure I am. I don’t achieve anything, ever.” I wished I was an overachiever because in my mind that meant I would actually be achieving things that I wanted to excel at. As I’ve gotten older I look back at 16 year old Mariah and I’m mortified for her. The pressure, THE PRESSURE. The exhausting, heavy pressure I used as a tool to manipulate my sense of worth. I thought: If you do, then you are. And imagine my daily surprise as I didn’t live up to the standard I set. Looking back I see that most times I was setting myself up for failure on purpose. Was I addicted to the feeling of disappointment because I had gotten used to it and was comfortable there? Probably. Sound familiar?

There are great days, there are terrible days. There are days when you’re feeling confident, then there are days when you get corrected for one little thing and it sends you off the deep end. You want to quit, you want to run, you want to scream “I TOLD YOU SO” at the world because you are so convinced you suck anyway, why even try? People who don’t have this weird “try til you die” complex may not understand this post. But I believe so deeply that there is a fraction of you guys who can identify with this. “I have no purpose or talent!”, “I’m not good at anything!”, “All I do is mess up and make mistakes…”. All of these thoughts are… #1: Lies and just a matter of a very strict opinion of someone who can be found in your mirror. #2: Connected to your tasks and your activities and accomplishments. Can I please tell you something? And if not you then at least 16 year old Mariah?

Your worth is not connected to your work.

Who you are is not a direct stream from the river of your tasks.

You are valuable because of the beauty of who you simply are.

I am begging you to just let yourself be for a whole week. Take the pressure off for a couple days, I guarantee you’ll “accomplish” a whole lot more in the freedom of who you are. It’s way better than living under the tyranny of your insecurities ruling your every move, thought and belief. Live from the truth you are valuable instead of living for approval. If y0u’re constantly trying to gain approval through your works and what you can do – you will be depleted, lonely, exhausted and going nowhere on a treadmill of self doubt. God wants you to be free to run on the trail of freedom. There’s beauty there.

On the treadmill, when you make mistake you’re met with punishment. Your mind starts beating up your heart. Your heart is black and blue and broken at the end of the day.

On the trail of freedom, when you make a mistake you’re met with God’s Grace and the ability to learn and grow. Your heart is valued there, your mind is balanced there.

Which one do you want to spend your life running on? Because trust me, self punishment doesn’t really get you anywhere but  alone with scars on your wrist, binding thoughts in your mind, and looking for the next thing that will numb you. I lived in that space for years of my life. Waiting to be rescued from myself, but I would only listen to myself. I was alone in a crowded room, I was blind to beautiful moments, I was brimming with sorrow in joyful encounters. All because when you beat yourself up for every, little mistake you become your master. You become a slave you your standards. You become locked up. But remember, you have the key. It takes you  to say, “no, more”. No more are you dictated by your to-do list, your grades, your position, your job, your works, your status. No longer are you only worthy of love if you are the best. Because you’ll NEVER be the best! (You should probably know that now…) But you can always be the best you. You can always get better, learn more, love more. It’s hard to get to know yourself if you hate yourself. And the beauty of life starts when you can be just you. When you can BE, not just DO. There’s harmony that happens in your life when you can do your best not only in what you do, but be your best you no matter where you’re at in life. Being your best looks like being kind to yourself. It looks like having the same grace Jesus has for you on you. If Jesus is nice to you, why shouldn’t you be nice to you? Isn’t that the point anyway? To be more like Him? Do you think your Creator would punish you the same way you punish yourself? Uhhhh. I don’t think so. It’s not His character, and it doesn’t have to be yours either. You are worthy of love, you are worthy of joy. You are worthy of enjoying your life and not feeling badly for it. You are allowed to be proud of yourself even if you did one thing on your to-do list. You have permission to rest in God’s assessment of who you are. Approved, beautiful, powerful, lovely, kind, funny. You are all of that and more because you were simply made that way. Who God created you to be is who you are. You can’t earn it, you can’t work for it, you simply just are. And there’s nothing you can do to change His mind. You are simply lovely just because you were created that way. Live from that, not for that. Get off the treadmill and run to freedom.  And lastly, no matter if you believe it or not…. Someone is proud of you. Obsessed with you, even. Even if you never did another thing, you are cherished. You are extraordinary.

Love you!

Mariah.

PS: HOW CUTE IS THIS GALLERY WALL IN OUR BEDROOM? It’s a work in progress, just like me!

The Houston Chronicles: A Day at the Parfumerie

Hey, Friends! Just a quick hello here. The last few weeks Byron and I have been at our High School Camp and our Middle School Camp with our students one after another so it’s been non-stop! We got home Friday, caught up on some home stuff on Saturday and then went to church all day Sunday! So when Byron decided to have a day-date on Monday I was so excited!  I get asked all of the time, “what do I do in Houston?”! I am working on posting Mariah’s Guide to HTX but for now, I wanted to tell you a little bit of what we did yesterday. It was such a fun, simple day all in the same area!

Breakfast! We started the day off with breakfast at Cafeza. Cafeza is one of our favorite places in Houston! It’s nestled in the First Ward of Houston Heights are. They have the best breakfast tacos, coffee and vibe. If you go, I would order the Veggie Breakfast Tacos, the Cafe Miel to drink with almond milk and of course finish off your meal with Churros. It’s so chill in there, we go every Monday morning!

Next we went off to take some photos around Montrose. Montrose is so dreamy, I would move there if we could! So many ask me where I take my Instagram photos, and the answer is really anywhere. But Montrose has really cool neighborhoods and streets to snap some pictures.

Shopping! After that we love to walk around and window shop. The streets are crowned with antique shops, vintage clothing stores, tattoo parlours and cafes. A few of our favorite places to shop are…

Merchant and Market , A great shop filled with eye catching gems. I love just seeing their creativity in their inventory. You have to check it out!

Montrose Shop, THIS PLACE IS MY FAVORITE. You guys, I wish I could live in here. Montrose Shop is a beautiful shop in the heart of Montrose. They have everything from clothing to candles, from cookbooks to stationary. And plus it’s a great backdrop for photos and also a place to get inspiration for your home and life in general. I love you, Montrose Shop!

713 Tattoo Parlour , Between Byron and I we have 6 tattoos, three each. One of our favorite places to get inked is 713 Tattoo Parlour right on Wertheimer in Montrose. Byron spontaneously decided to get a tattoo he’s been wanting, and Mike took us in and did a great job! S’cute!

Le Labo, O. M. G. you guys. So I grew up going back and forth being Houston and LA. There is a Le Labo shop in Venice, CA that my dad and I love to pop into when we’re in the area! Le Labo is not only made from organic ingredients, it’s made freshly in the shoppe. There are scents to choose from, you pick your favorite, and then instead of them pulling you a dusty box off of the shelf – the craftsman or craftswomen there go into a little glass lab and start blending your fragrance right in front of you. It’s not just a perfume or cologne, it’s a fragrance experience and it’s so luxurious and special. And then they print you the label with your name on it. I picked up the scent SANTAL 33, which is more on the spicy side. Byron and I are both obsessed with the scent and will probably both be wearing it! We also really love their candles, my favorite on is PALO SANTO 14. If you’re looking for a fragrance, I would suggest Thé Noir, Bergamot 0r Fleur D’Oranger. It’s a sweet gift for someone you love or just even for yourself.

Lastly, we hit up Common Bond Bakery for more coffee and snacks! If you go to Common Bond to study, hangout, or just take some time to find inspiration – I would order the Pistachio Croissant, Red Velvet Macaron and the Cookie Dough Macaron, a Vanilla Almond Milk Flat White and I also usually take a loaf of freshly baked bread to bring home for breakfast, grilled cheeses and just in general bread cravings. Hehe!

Above are a few photos from our day-date and our visit to Le Labo Houston! Thank you Giselle, Carly and the Le Labo Team for being so awesome!

I have a lot of posts coming your way as summer comes to a close.

Love you! Mariah

Best Pesto Ever

Hey Guys! A few weeks ago I was making dinner and was making homemade pesto! I posted the recipe on my story, but so many of you asked me to put it on the blog! Pesto is pretty much the easiest thing to make ever and it’s a staple in our fridge! I suggest using really fresh ingredients for a really fresh taste. Believe it or not it only takes a few ingredients, a food processor and 5 minutes to whip this up!

What You Need

  • 3 cups fresh basil
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional but suggested!)
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

What You Do

Add all ingredients besides olive oil to your food processor! Start to mix by pulsing and drizzle in olive oil slowly until the pesto is smooth and creamy!

How To Serve

There are so many ways I love eating pesto. In the morning with eggs and avocado is a great way to start your day! For a snack I would go with a plate of pesto, seed crackers, turkey and parmesan. For lunch or dinner I would serve it on the side of a roasted chicken and veggies!

I hope you guys love this recipe! Let me know if you try it!

x Mariah

Home Is Wherever I’m With You (Chapter 1)

Hey Everyone! THE DAY HAS COME! My most requested post to date, a tour of our little loft. One of my best friends ever, Stephi Velez of www.ragsandgrace.com stayed with us over the weekend and snagged some photos of us at home. The one room we didn’t show was our kitchen because I want a special post just about that area so stayed tuned for Chapter 2! We lived in a different loft in the building when we got married, and then in November we moved into this unit. We liked the apartment structure while still keeping the loft vibes. We’ve been in this loft for seven months, and it’s just now starting to really feel like home. The interior is darker with fewer windows and full brick walls, so we went with lighter furniture and accessories to contrast… We had a TV on top of our faux fireplace mantle, but recently we took it down and put up this beautiful portrait from our wedding that Byron gave me on our anniversary! Never did I think we’d have a HUGE hand painted portrait of our faces on the wall, but it was a handmade piece of art from Jesse DeLeon and it’s a conversation starter for sure. Now when we have friends over, we’re not just staring at a TV but we’re talking about art, playing boardgames, and actually looking each other in the eye. So many people ask me how I designed my home and really my Mom is an incredible interior designer that gave me so many pieces and helped me put everything together. I change things constantly, move furniture around, and restyle areas all the time. Another question I get is how I style my book shelves, which is a totally different post! So if anyone wants to know specific styling things comment below! Anyway, thank you guys for checking this out! We hope you like this glimpse into our little home! Xx Mariah

5 Things I’ve Learned From My Mother

Hey Friends!

I hope everyone had a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend! Mine started at church watching my favorite preacher (Byron, hehe!) speak about the life of Naomi for our Junior High Service, and then we went home and changed into comfies before we headed over to my amazing mama in law’s house where we napped, ate salmon burgers and watched the game. It was a sweet day! I missed my Mama but she was in Pittsburgh with HER Mama which made me really happy. In the spirit of Mother’s Day though, I wanted to share something super dear and important to me! It was SO HARD to narrow it down to 5 things, I could write a whole book about my mom! But I think these things will encourage you too. So without further ado, here are 5 Things I’ve Learned From My Mother.

  1. MOISTURIZE

Guys, this may not be what you were expecting but this is a major key in the Meleasa Houghton playbook. She’s literally been swiping moisturizer on my face since I was a baby and now I moisturize morning, noon and night! She claims that the drugstore stuff is just as good as the Nordstrom stuff. She is the perfect picture of natural radiance and she claims that moisturizing, drinking water and eating candy is why she glows. LOL. So here are some of her favorite moisturizers and where to find them!

  1. COME IN LOW

My Mom has never been someone to make a show of herself. You can usually find her at a party, in a corner talking to the person no one was talking to. Anyone who knows her personally can attest to that, and I know it. “Come In Low” is a term my mom and dad taught me always growing up. Basically it’s just this idea of humility in every situation you end up in. I’ve watched my mom walk into rooms and change the temperature just with the grace she walks in. She never comes looking for attention, she always comes to the party with the intention to bless others. I really believe that the currency of elevation is honor, and that’s what I’ve watched her do my whole life! Humility, generosity, grace will take you places that self promotion never could.

  1. WEAR THE ACCESSORY, DON’T LET THE ACCESSORY WEAR YOU.

This is a big one ladies, when you get dressed in the morning and you wanna look bad and boujie: the key is simplicity. Draw the focus of your accessory to two areas. A killer shoe and a killer earring. Or a killer necklace and a statement bag. But never all four at once. This is probably the first thing my mom ever taught me about fashion and I think of it everyday when I get ready for the day!

My mom is pretty much known for her earring game. Here are some Meleasa Inspired Earrings that I KNOW she would wear!

  1. THERE’S HEALING IN BEING HEARD….SO LISTEN

Something that amazes me about Mom is her ability to love other’s even if it inconveniences her schedule. I’ve never seen anyone who would literally stop everything to be there for a friend, a family member or anyone in need. I remember knocking on my mom’s door when I was little, she would be sitting at her vanity with a phone to her ear. I would sit and play and I always noticed that there were times when she would just gently give hums of understanding and sounds of sympathy while the soul on the other line would talk and talk. Towards the end she would give words of encouragement, offer prayers and help find a solution. She’s the best (and might I add free) therapist I know. When I got older she told me “there is so much healing in being heard, that’s what I am for other’s… a listener because Jesus listens to me.” I think that is so cool. She teaches me to find people, opportunities and circumstances that just need a shoulder to cry on, a heart to beat with theirs and a ear to listen.

  1. FIND A MESSAGE IN YOUR MESS

The final and most recent lesson I’ve learned from my mom  is the most simple. In this season of my life, there is so much new. New job, new marriage, new insecurities, new failures, new victories. Sometimes the change can feel like I’m drowning in waves of unknown. And you know what is hilarious? Anytime I talk to my mom about this, she listens, she waits and then she speaks. Nine times out of ten she’ll bring up a story about someone going through something 10x crazier than what I just told her. What is she doing? She’s not minimizing my pain, but she’s maximizing my perspective to see that maybe something I’m going through can bring someone else the healing that they need. My flesh screams “BUT WHAT ABOUT ME. I AM HURTING, HELLO!” But then I hear Meleasa whisper, “You’re going through this for someone else… That’s what you need to focus on.” Every. Time. She. Is. Right.

God has sent people my way that I know how to encourage because I’ve been where they are. I’ve been rescued and now I can pass on the life raft. Life is messy, life is sticky and life can be blatantly disappointing. But what do you do with the pain? Cover the scars with concealer? No! You show them proudly to show people, I’ve been through it and you can get through it too. I’ve watched my mom do this time and time again. Her vulnerability is unmatched to me. She’s an open book that speaks truth and beauty and dignity. She’s a well of perspective and she has this uncanny ability to challenge you and comfort you at the same time. Every messy room in her life she manages to somehow turn into a hospital for someone else. If you’re reading this on your tiny iPhone, mom… I’m amazed by you. Please write a book or start a podcast or something! I love you, we all love you. Everyday is Mother’s Day to ME!

Xx Mariah
